“We’re all in the same boat.”
That’s what we often say when something affects many of us. But what kind of boat is it? What’s happening to this boat? And what’s happening to us?
Does being in the same boat mean going through the same thing?
There are so many things to figure out: rowing, choosing a direction, looking overboard, taking up enough space, sharing responsibility between yourself and the crew, finally getting some rest (but are we even allowed to?). Some of us need to know where we’re going, while for others, it’s enough to know that someone else is here beside us.
We constantly find ourselves in the same boat with others: in families, relationships, friendships, workplaces, cities, countries, communities. Sometimes what brings us together is a choice, sometimes chance, sometimes love, crisis, loss, or necessity.
What makes us a community when our experiences are different?
  • How can we stay close without becoming the same?
  • Who is responsible for what in our shared boat?
  • And what happens when someone suddenly wants to sail in a different direction?
We invite you to the playback performance “In the Same Boat” to share and witness stories about how we find ourselves alongside others, drift apart, depend on one another, negotiate our direction, and search for our own place among others.
Playback Theatre Vakhtery is an improvisational theatre group from Kharkiv. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the group was in Lithuania and decided to stay. Since then, the theatre has continued its work here and welcomed new members.
A playback performance is a space where audience members are invited to share stories from their own lives, and the actors spontaneously bring them to life on stage through movement, words, music, metaphor, and interaction.
