Contemporary circus and dance show based on the first (uncensored) edition of the brothers’ Grimm tales

Based on three unknown tales from the brothers' Grimm tales from the first and uncensored edition of the book, way before it was meant for children, Grimmaces tries to combine circus, dance and the art of tales into an intimate and participatory show.

Violent, chaotic, grim. The tales present a world unhinged. People and creatures lose lives, regain them, seek revenge and sometimes a goat ruins the life of a family. Can a circus be a meeting point to understand the unexplainable? Can the audience and the artists co-create a show?

Three artists, three audience members create this show, the rest watch as they read, dance, do acrobatics and Chinese pole. All based on tales that, on one hand, have nothing to do with real life, on the other,– tell something deeply human and recognisable beyond words.

Co-produced by Kanta Company and Teatronas

Partners: Subtopia (Sweden), Dynamo Workspace (Denmark), Arts Printing House and Kaunas city Chamber Theatre (Lithuania)

The premiere is co-financed by the Vilnius City Municipality, the project “Grimmaces” has received funding from the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Culture and Art Programme.
