Kaunas City Chamber Theatre, implementing the inclusive performing arts platform project “Serpantino Laboratory”, together with the Goethe-Institut Lithuania, invites you to a two-day dance workshop “Personal Explorations”. The workshops will take place on April 7–8 at Kaunas Culture Centre and will be led by DIN A 13 choreographers Gerda König and Gitta Roser, who are visiting Kaunas once again.
The program is free of charge and open to professional dancers and performing arts students, as well as anyone interested in contemporary dance and inclusive art practices.
During the sessions, participants will explore creative methods based on improvisation, body awareness practices, and principles of choreographic composition. The workshops encourage searching for an individual movement language, reflecting on personal experiences, and exploring how the body can become a space for artistic expression and social dialogue.
About DIN A 13
DIN A 13 is an international dance company founded in Cologne in 1995 and led by choreographers Gerda König and Gitta Roser. It is considered one of the leading pioneers of “mixed-abled” dance in Europe — a creative practice in which dancers with and without disabilities work together.
The company’s artistic vision is based on the idea that diverse bodies expand the aesthetic boundaries of contemporary dance. This approach challenges established standards of professional dance and offers a broader understanding of the body’s potential on stage. Over nearly three decades, the company has created numerous performances and international projects presented across festivals in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, often addressing themes of identity, body norms, social inclusion, and community.
In addition to stage work, DIN A 13 is actively involved in educational projects and training programs for professional dancers and emerging artists, including the international initiative M.A.D.E., which aims to expand professional dance education opportunities for dancers of varying physical abilities.
A unique creative experience
“My creative work often explores the human state between emotions and desires, between internal and social conflicts. In choreographic images, I seek contrasts and provocations that raise questions and stimulate discussion. Movement material is created in close collaboration with dancers — their personal experiences, feelings, and memories are transformed into movement. It is important to me that dance expression is full of emotion and feels alive to the audience,” says choreographer Gerda König.
The workshops in Kaunas offer a rare opportunity to become familiar with DIN A 13’s creative methodology and contemporary dance practices in which bodily diversity becomes the foundation of the creative process. It is a unique chance to work with artists who have been shaping the international discourse of inclusive dance for many years and expanding the boundaries of dance as an art form.
The workshops will take place in the Small Hall of Kaunas Culture Centre (the space is fully accessible and adapted to participants with disabilities). Registration is required due to limited capacity.
The project is funded by: Lithuanian Council for Culture, Kaunas City Municipality, Goethe-Institut Vilnius.
